Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally original authentic Imperial German WWI War Ensign Battle Flag (Reichskriegsflagge), with a large Balkenkreuz (Beam Cross) in the field, with a circle around the Imperial German Eagle at the intersection of the cross. The canton of the flag contains the imperial state colors and the Prussian Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross). The flag is made of cotton or linen, the standard material for flags of the period.
The flag measures 28" tall and 38" across, which is one of the smaller sizes used. The flag header is canvas, and is marked with the CROWN / W proof for Kaiser Wilhlem II, as well as another proof and the number 16, for issue in 1916. There look to have originally been hanger loops or tabs on the ends of the header, but they have been removed. These flags were usually used as "War Ensign" flags by Naval Vessels, however this example is relatively small, and looks to have been used by land forces. It has some faintly stamped regimental markings on the upper right portion:
33 R 15 194.
B. A. I.
F. M. G. A. 1. 35.
The top line looks like it might be for the 33rd (East Prussian) Fusiliers "Count Roon" Regiment, however the other two lines we have not been able to identify.
This flag is in very good used condition, with the usual age toning and some dirt and staining on the body. It is one of the most attractive issued during WWI, and would make a great display piece.
