Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good condition original Überzug (helmet cover), something that we have only had very few of before. Thought by some to be a product of the First World war, the Überzug ("Pull over" or helmet cover) was first introduced for general issue on 17 May 1892. The brass and German silver fittings on all pickelhaube helmets, although very attractive in garrison, proved to be highly reflective and were determined to be a liability in the field. For this reason, a cloth Überzug was introduced to be worn by all ranks on all helmets when in the field. This need was later negated in 1915, with the introduction of oxide coated steel fittings.
This example is in very good condition, and has flexible stiffened pockets at the front and rear, for hooking over pickelhaube visors. One of these is marked D.R.P., for Deutsches Reichspatent, indicating it is a patented design in Germany. The top spike cover on this example is about 5 inches long, definitely taller than other examples we have seen. Certain units such as Field Artillery and Guard regiments, as well as Officers, used taller spikes on the top of their Pickelhauben, so they would need covers like these, designed to fit a taller spike. Overall condition is very good, with just a few small holes and light staining.
A great example of a hard to find German Pickelhaube Accessory, ready to display!
NOTE: COVER ONLY. Helmet is used to show the correct shape, and is not included.
