Original WWI Silver Plated Three Wick Cigar Lighter by Tiffany & Co. Marked to the Lafayette Escadrille

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. The La Fayette Escadrille (French: Escadrille de La Fayette) was a U.S. unit constituted in 1916 under French command, made up of volunteers who came forward to fight for France during World War I in Europe before the United States entered the war in 1917. The escadrille of the Aéronautique Militaire was composed largely of American volunteer pilots flying fighters. It was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Here we have a lovely silver plated triple cigar lighter, consisting of a bowl bottom, with a triple wick top. The end of each wick has a handle that moves a rotating cover to snuff out the wick. It measures about 4 inches across, not counting the cover handles. The center of the top dish has a plaque reading LAFAYETTE / ESCADRILLE, and the lighter is overall in great condition. It looks to have had fresh wicks installed, but it is also possible that they are original, an that the lighter was seldom used.

We assume that this was purchased from the Tiffany & Co. in France while the members were there prior to the U.S. entrance into the war.

A great collector's item from the early days of the first world war, ready to display, or even use!
