Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. In lovely condition, this rare type of bayonet for the Swiss Vetterli rifle is featured in THE BAYONET BOOK by Watts & White on page Page 269, item 600, in the SWISS SECTION. The bayonet features a straight spearpoint sawback blade of almost 19", with a steel cross guard marked with serial number 215905. Overall length is 23 1/2 inches, and the blade has an interesting main edge that is only ground from one side of the blade, leaving the other side flat, except on the false edge. The blade is maker marked S.J.G. NEUHAUSEN on the ricasso and is in very good condition, with just a bit of staining.
The grip has lovely dark brown gutta percha checkered composite grips, with an old style long leaf spring bayonet catch. There is a bit of wear and oxidation on the metal parts of the hilt, but nothing major.
The bayonet is in its original steel mounted leather scabbard and leather belt frog. The leather does show wear and has been exposed to a lot of grease, so it is somewhat dirty and oily. The rear of the frog has a faded marker mark that says J. HOLDEHECCER and has a date of 1883.
