Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is straight out of the attic ! Absolutely original that has not seen the light of day for maybe nearly 100 years. This is a nice WWI AEF US Army or USMC M1909 Leather Belt Holster for the Colt or S&W M1917 .45LC Revolver. This is a vintage old military belt holster, and it is well used, with some of the stitching having popped over the years. However the leather is solid, and could be re-stitched by a cobbler if desired, as all the parts are still present, even the tie-down loop which is so often missing.
The leather has darkened with age, and has a worn US oval logo on the front. On the rear of the holster there are some markings, but due to age and wear they are not completely legible:
We cannot make out the second initial of the maker, but there is only one WWI military contractor marking that begins with a G: G&K, for Graton & Knight Manufacturing Co. of Worcester, Massachusetts. The date is mostly clear, and the inspector mark is definitely clear, and has been seen on many other period holsters.
The most interesting part about this holster are the markings on the front flap: BAT. F. / 139. / F A.. We believe these markings represent Battery F of the 139th Field Artillery.
This holster is not a left hand design. It was originally designed to be carried on the right side of the waist with the gun in the "Butt Forward" position. Please see: page #216 in Edward Scott Meadows book "US Military Holsters and Pistol Cartridge Boxes"
A nice condition authentic example of a nearly 100 year old holster for your WWI collection. Totally fine and functional to leave as is, or have a cobbler replace the stitching.
