Original WWI & WWII German Mauser Bayonet Lot - 2 items

Item Description

Original Items: One Set of 2 Available. We received these out of an old collection, untouched for years. As with any collection, there were some items that stood out, and others that were purchased as "projects", either due to condition, or because they were in want of a scabbard. All of these are original items, in varying condition, all offered with or without their original correct scabbards. They are offered as is, and many are still coated in the original arsenal grease.

The bayonets are as follows:

- Original WWII German Mauser 98k Bayonet with Scabbard and Wooden Grips:
Features include smooth wooden grips, 9 ½” single edged steel blade and an all steel scabbard. Markings are not visible, but it is an original WWII German issue. This doesn’t appear to have seen much service, but there are runner marks on the blade and some rust. Bayonet comes with a partial, relic condition brown leather frog. Overall it is indeed a fantastic bayonet, ready for display!

The Mauser Karabiner 98 kurz ("carbine 98 short") was the standard issue infantry rifle of the German Wehrmacht during WWII. It was chambered for 8mm mauser, and was one of the last members of a long line of Mauser-designed bolt-action rifles. To accompany the shorter rifle, the S84/98 III bayonet was developed, which was shorter than previous variants, and usable as a fighting knife or utility knife.

- Turkish modified WW1 German 98/05 Mauser Butcher Knife bayonet:
So this is an unusual one, a first for us and this was actually more common than you would think. This is a good example of the M-1898/05 Bayonet (Seitengewehr), which was the most common German Bayonet of the First World War. It was intended for use on the standard issue service rifle of Imperial Germany: the Mauser-designed Gewehr 98 (GEW 98). It features a heavy 14.5-inch steel blade with distinct bulge toward the point, giving extra weight and power to the business end, known as a "butcher blade".

This example has a very nice set of original wood grips, though the grooves are mostly gone. Bayonet lock is fully functional. The blade ricasso is maker marked:

WAFFENFABRIK
MAUSER A.G.
OBERNDORF a.N.

The blade is also dated on the blade's spine 17 under a proof mark of a Crown over W., for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the year the bayonet was accepted. The blade is in good condition, though it does have some staining, and has been sharpened several times.

Now for where the Turkish modification comes into play. You probably noticed the crossguard is a little different than what you are used to seeing, that’s because it is. The crossguard fashioned onto this German bayonet is actually from a Turkish M1913 bayonet. The M1913 bayonet was used with the 8 mm Mauser M1893 and M1903 rifles. This is a very unique and very well made conversion bayonet! We almost missed it ourselves.
