Original WWII German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger with Scabbard - Damaged Grip

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice example of a 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, typical of the style produced later in the war. The celluloid grip of this 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger is a lovely light orange color and in good condition, though it has suffered cracking and damage on the ends. The celluloid material breaks down over time, which makes it brittle. The pommel end has chipped away due to pressure from the pommel mount, and there is also a chip on the ferrule end, where the braided bullion wire is. The wire itself is in good shape, though is loose due to the grip damage.

The hilt mounts are very nice on this dagger, though there is a small amount of wear. The pommel is aluminum, a very common material used on 2nd model Luftwaffe Daggers. The oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. It shows overall light wear, with a nice patina. The "mobile" swass have been gold highlighted, which is partly intact.

The crossguard is made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows wear and light oxidation, which has degraded the feathering on the eagle slightly. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which shows a bit of wear. The ferrule is nickel plated steel, which has worn through in one spot, which shows a bit of oxidation.

This scabbard is a fine, straight example, having an aged zinc plating over the steel base, with a lot of patina. There is however lifting of the plating and oxidation in those places, as shown. The aluminum carry bands are somewhat worn and oxidized, which makes the oak leaves somewhat difficult to see. The attached carrying rings are plated steel, and patinated like the scabbard. The throat is retained by a single screw on the reverse of the scabbard.

The carbon steel blade is in very good condition, and has not been sharpened or used. The tip is intact, with no bending or other issues. The blade finish is in very good condition, though it has overall very light oxidation, so the original factory cross grain is hard to see, though it is definitely visible near the cross guard. There is no maker mark that we can see, however this was not uncommon. Some blade makers would sell unmarked blades to fitting manufacturers, who did not leave any markings either. The leather blade washer is still present, but it is deteriorated a bit due to pressure from the scabbard.

This is a nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger, with a damaged grip, offered at a very reasonable price. Ready to display!
