Item Description
Original Items: Only Ones Available. This is an interesting lot of WWII Japanese items which were sent home by a U.S. Navy Sailor who served aboard the U.S.S. Los Angeles during the closing days of WWII. The souvenirs are housed in the original handmade box in which the items were sent back home to Pennsylvania. Groupings like this, still housed in their original mail-home box are getting harder and hard to find on the market. Groupings like this in their ship home boxes are interesting in the sense that it satisfies the wonderment of “who brought this item back?”.
The lot contains a variety of items; a 1940 Dated Japanese Military Gas Mask, a Signed Japanese Flag, Imperial Japanese Navy Rank Insignias, two Japanese patriotic themed Sake Cups, and a Folding Fan with nickeled handle.
The shipping box itself is handmade, fitted with a hinged lid, and painted with an ochre colored paint. The sailor painted the addressee’s information, along with his return address, on both sides of the box.
The items:
-1941 Dated Japanese Gas Mask with 1940 (Showa 15) dated filter. Face Mask is in very good condition. Lenses are intact and clear. Elastic on the facemask straps still retain elasticity, and the metal fittings still retain a high amount of their original ordnance tan paint. The filter retains its original paper label.
-Signed Japanese “Good Luck” Flag. Constructed of silk, with two reinforced corners with original ties. The flag is silk, and has damage to the material, as pictured. The flag needs to be framed and stabilized.
-Two military/patriotic themed porcelain Sake Cups. One is certainly navy themed for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
-Two IJN Enlisted rank insignias for Seaman first class and Seaman fourth class.
We have not conducted any research into the service history of the sailor who sent these items home. This could be a fantastic research project if one so desired.
