Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice condition Imperial Japanese WWII Army Parade Sword, with a nickel-plated blade and a fine all brass hilt bearing an officer tassel. Overall length is 38 1/4 inches. The hilt has a pommel cap which acts to retain a nut which in turn secures the tang of the blade. The backstrap and grip tabs are decorated with cherry blossom flowers, with the tabs having the correct 10-petal Army version. The balance of the surfaces being nicely pebbled. The “D” guard curves downward to a pierced basket hilt, and is decorated with the same floral pattern. The quillon end tapers to a teardrop that is decorated with a lined "scroll" design. The hilt was once entirely gilt, however this has faded in most places, visible in more "protected" areas.
The officer who owned this katana had a Family / Clan Crest, or "Mon" added to the back strap, as pictured. There are a multitude of these, and unfortunately we were not able to identify the symbol. We leave this as an excellent research opportunity for the purchaser. There are many books regarding Japanese Mon, but almost all are in Japanese.
The grip of this sword is of painted hardwood, and is highly ribbed. The ribs are wrapped with a skein of brass wires, though many are loose and out of place. There is also some play in the hilt fittings, which are now loose on the tang. The steel scabbard is also nickle plated and in very good condition with some minor dents and scuffs. There is some lifting of the nickel plate and oxidation as shown.
The blade is in very good condition and measures approximately 32 1/2 inches long. It is nickel-plated, and the tip is in the usual Japanese geometry. It still retains over 90% of the original plating. There is a fuller that runs about 2/3 of the way down the blade, and slowly fades into the body of the blade.
