Original WWII U.S. License Plate #545 B for Fort Bragg in North Carolina

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a genuine WWII Era license plate from the Fort Bragg U.S. Army Base, located in North Carolina. Originally established as "Camp Bragg" in 1918 as an artillery training ground, it was nearly closed in 1921. It was saved however, and renamed Fort Bragg in 1922, with permanent buildings added quickly. It then proceeded to become a major training center.

By 1940, during World War II, the population of Fort Bragg had reached 5,400; however, in the following year, that number ballooned to 67,000. Various units trained at Fort Bragg during World War II, including the 9th Infantry Division, 2nd Armored Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 100th Infantry Division, and various field artillery groups. The population reached a peak of 159,000 during the war years.

The plate measures 12" x 4" and features white letters on a red background and reads:

FORT BRAGG 545 B

The rear of the plate has some additional information written on with marker, giving a date of - 1941 -, as well as what look to be information regarding when it was acquired.
