Orignal U.S. WWI 2nd Division KIA Pocket Testament Bible - James Frederick Carper - 23rd Infantry Regiment

Regular price $195.00

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting pocket bible that likely belonged to James Frederick Carper, either being taken overseas or kept by his sister, Mary, whose name is in the front with a date of January 23rd, 1918. As James left for France in July 1918, it’s possible she gifted this to him before he left, and received it back with his personal belongings.

There is an inscription on the 2nd page:

JAMES FREDERICK CARPER
BORN APRIL 3, 1893
KILLED IN ARGONNE FOREST
OCT. 4, 1918
HE MADE THE “SUPREME SACRIFICE”

Although this inscription is definitely period, it is a bit inaccurate as Carper was killed in action on September 13th, 1918, during the St. Mihiel Offensive. This could just be incorrect as the date the family was notified of his death, which happened often. Or he could have been reported missing at first and October 4th was the original day he was declared dead. Overall this is a very interesting bible with a very sad history. Comes ready for further research and display!
