U.S. WWII Army VII Corps Named Large Grouping in Footlocker

Item Description

Original Items: one-of-a-kind set. This is an archive of a soldier’s entire WW2 service all stuffed into a single foot locker.

Harold K. Downey #01283046 born March 20th 1916 enlisted as a private as soon as war was declared, attended Non Commissioned Officer's school October 1941-January 1942. Promoted to 2nd lieutenant on May 1st 1942, then 1st lieutenant on December 15th 1942, promoted to captain on July 5th 1943 and was heavily involved with the pre D-Day exercise of Operation DUCK a mock landing of continental Europe that started on December 23rd 1943 in England.

He was in the Machine records unit of the 7th CORPS and made a full report on Operation Duck that is included in the paperwork contained in the footlocker. He took part in the invasion landing at Utah Beach on D-Day plus 12 and took part in the Battle of Normandy up through France and Belgium to participate in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest near Aachen in Germany between September and December 1944.

Pulled back into Belgium across the Meuse River late December 1944 because of the German counter attack known as the Battle of the Bulge. Re-entered Germany on the 9th February 1945 and remained in Germany until the German surrender and then he got transferred to the Pacific theater!

All this time he recorded events, material deploys and outcomes from each action and it would appear that this huge treasure trove of paperwork marked "RESTICTED" and "SECRET" tells the majority of his WW2 story including a complete listing of all his "stations" in the conflict from 30th March 1944 until May 1945.
