Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a well-worn example of an M1895 Pickelhaube with a Prussian Wappen (front plate). As is seldom seen, this example has the original chinstrap, but it has broken off of one of the end pieces, which could possibly be remedied. This example is both named under the front visor and unit marked under the rear visor with:
P.R.30
This indicates the soldier served with the 30th Pioneer Regiment during the war. This particular regiment saw heavy combat at Verdun. The spike on top of the helmet denotes infantry, and for some reason the helmet has two Tri-color (German Empire) national cockades and no Prussian cockade, which could be fixed.
The Pickelhaube has its original brass front plate which has oxidized heavily. The helmet is stamped on the interior crown with Size 57. The helmet is also missing the visor trim as shown. The helmet is in overall rough but fair condition with potential for display. There is crazing to the exterior and interior leather, but the helmet’s liner is fully retained along with the leather tie string.
The leather of the chinstrap is heavily worn but could be remedied with some work. The leather finish has some checking, typical for a helmet of this age. An impressive piece that absolutely saw heavy combat during the war, ready for further research and display.
