Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic absolutely original U.S. manufactured, M-63 Anti-Aircraft Ground Mount for the standard U.S. M2 Browning .50 caliber heavy machine gun. These were used to mount the M2 on the ground for use in an anti-aircraft role, as the M3 tripod was unsuitable for this. Likewise, the M-63 is not the most stable at lower angle fire. It comes complete with an excellent "Tombstone" M2 Belt Drum "Magazine Chest", which attaches to the feed tray on the mount.
This mount can also be used with the M1919A4 .30 cal Browning light machine gun (LMG), though the trigger mechanism built into the cross head will not be usable. The side of the crosshead still has a fully legible data plate, definitely a rarity, and there is no paint on top of it, so we can easily read it:-
C.J.I 20630
MOUNT CAL. .50
AA. M63
MADE BY
HEINTZ MANUFACTURING CO.
PHILADELPHIA, PENNA., U.S.A.
This is the usual manufacturer we see for these, and there is also a partial U.S. Ordnance Dept. "Crossed Cannons" cartouche on the middle right.
This example appears to be fully functional, with the remote trigger and safety working correctly. It has both the front and rear mounting pins for the trunions on the M2 Browning, though we do not have any on hand that we could use to check the mount. It has the small container on the left side of the cross head, however it there is no side trigger inside, as these were usually kept installed on the guns themselves. Overall condition is very good, showing the expected wear from service, age, and storage. It has been repainted several times, which has unfortunately frozen the sleeves that hold the upright handle in place, so it cannot be folded down at present.
The included 225 round M2 "Ammunition Chest", more commonly called the "Tombstone" magazine or belt drum, is in great shape, with a lovely OD green finish, and it still opens correctly. It is easily mounted onto the M63 crosshead, and really adds to the piece. We unfortunately do not have the loading winder used on the top portion.
All U.S. Browning Machine Gun Mounts have become increasingly difficult to obtain in recent years and this offers a rare opportunity to add one of these totally genuine original military issue U.S. Model 63 mounts to your military collection. Impressive to say the least.
Weighs nearly 100 lbs and ships in 2-3 boxes depending on location and service speed. We have not had one of these available in years, and we cannot recall any Tombstone magazines that we have had in the past. Ready to add to your collection and display!
The M63 ground mount is a four-legged anti-aircraft weapon mount used on the M2HB Browning machine gun. The tripod itself weighs 65 kg (144 lb) and has a height of 106.7 cm (42 in) with M2. It has a maximum elevation of 85°, depression of 29° and traverse of 360°.
The mount is usually sandbagged in a hole with each leg staked down. Use against ground targets is better suited to the M3 tripod because the mount tends to be unstable when the gun is fired at low angles.
